Town Hall Square
After the construction of Town Hall, the area around the grist mill and Lower Shawme Pond, which had been called Town Square, became known as Town Hall Square.
Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument On May 30, 1911, William Eaton, a wealthy businessman from Brockton, donated a 30-foot Civil War Monument to the people of Sandwich. Known as the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, it was erected next to the Town Hall on a grassy area that became know as Eaton Square. Without William Eaton, there would be no Civil War Memorial in Sandwich as town records illustrate that a committee was formed in 1867 to explore a way to honor those who died in the Civil War but the town voted to put off the project. Nothing was done until William Eaton donated his monument in 1911. To log this geocache on opencaching.us, the password is Monuments. |
