East Sandwich Game Farm (Scorton Creek)
The East Sandwich Game Farm is 133 acres located just off Rt. 6A in East Sandwich and abuts Talbot’s Point Conservation Area. There are 4 trails that explore the property. Here you’ll find an abundance of wildlife surrounded by salt marsh (Scorton Creek), fresh water ponds, uplands, lowlands, fields and forests. You can kayak, paddle board, canoe and fish in Scorton Creek.
There is a lot of history associated with the Game Farm. For more than 60 years (ending in 1987), the state raised 3,500 quails and 15,000 pheasants on the property every year for distribution throughout Massachusetts. In the early 17th and 18th century, the land was used as a shipyard making both one and two masted vessels. There is a very ancient trench that was used for hauling logs out of the woods to the site of the shipyard. Salt marsh hay was farmed and harvested here at one point. There’s also evidence the area was used as a prominent Native American settlement prior to its use as farmland for white settlers. Back in the late 1980's, an extremely high tide exposed a circle of burnt stones believed to be a Native American campfire in the beach embankment. The Game Farm is open from dawn to dusk. Dogs are welcome, just please clean up after them.
