St. John's Episcopal Church
St. John's Episcopal Church had its beginnings in late 1854 when nine citizens gathered for the first time. The Reverend Thomas B. Flowers, Rector of the Church of the Messiah in Woods Hole, offered his services on the first Sunday evening of each month. Without a building of their own, church members met in public halls for the next 45 years. The late 1800's were a difficult period for the church as six villages petitioned for separation from Sandwich (Bourne, Buzzards Bay, Pocasset, Cataumet, Monument Beach and Sagamore) and the Boston and Sandwich Glass Factory closed. This made it difficult to raise the money needed to construct a church building and pay the Rector. In 1896, a lot was purchased at 159 Old Main Street and an architect designed a small church with seating for 100 parishioners, a small sacristy, and a belltower. Construction began on March 13, 1899.
