Heritage Museums & Gardens
Heritage Museums & Gardens was founded in 1969 by J.K. Lilly, III and is set on 100 acres and offers 65 acres of gardens, walking trails and peaceful places. It has three galleries and expansive gardens, which feature thousands of rhododendrons, including a collection of the world-renowned Dexter variety. Other areas include holly, day lily, herb, hosta, heather gardens, and more than a thousand varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers. The grounds also include the Old East Mill, a windmill built in Orleans, Massachusetts in 1800; a labyrinth designed by Marty Cain, one of the best-known labyrinth designers in North America; a maze garden; the Cape Cod Hydrangea Garden; Flume Fountain and Hidden Hollow.
The Special Exhibitions Gallery, which hosts special traveling exhibitions, is a replica of the Revolutionary War building known as The Temple of Virtue in New Windsor, New York which is known as the location where George Washington bestowed the first Purple Heart to a wounded soldier. The American Art & Carousel Gallery houses a working 1908 carousel that features hand-carved animal figures. This gallery also hosts the American Art Collection, a large collection of New England folk art – paintings, weather vanes, Nantucket baskets, scrimshaw, shop signs, military miniatures and other rare artifacts. The Automobile Gallery contains an impressive collection of automobiles within a replica of the Shaker Round Barn in Hancock, Massachusetts. Heritage offers a variety of educational programs for children and adults, including lectures and workshops, and The Hundred Acre School, a private STEM-based preschool.
For the 2016 season, Heritage is open April 16 to October 10, daily from 9am to 5pm.
