The Weather Store
The Weather Store, which offers weather instruments for amateur and professional use, weather radios, cupolas and weather vanes, is housed in what was once the Sandwich office of the Cape Cod Railroad in 1868. The Cape Cod Railroad was a railroad in southeastern Massachusetts. Incorporated in 1846 as the Cape Cod Branch Railroad, it provided a rail link from Middleboro to Cape Cod. In January 1848, the first segment of the railroad was opened between Middleboro and Warehman. By May 1848, the rail line was was extended to Sandwich, allowing travel between Boston and Sandwich and serving the needs of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company. In 1854, the Cape Cod Branch Railroad was renamed the Cape Cod Railroad Company. That same year, construction extended service to Barnstable Village, Yarmouth Port and Hyannis. In 1868, the Cape Cod Railroad bought the Cape Cod Central Railroad and their line from Yarmouth to Orleans. In 1871, they bought the Plymouth and Vineyard Sound Railroad and their line from Buzzards Bay to Woods Hole. In 1872, the Cape Cod Railroad merged with the Old Colony and Newport Railway and the new company was renamed the Old Colony Railroad and finally completed the line to Provincetown in 1873. The lines of the Cape Cod Railroad then became part of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1893 with daily passenger service to southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape ending in 1959.
