Benjamin Nye Homestead and East Sandwich Grange Hall
Benjamin Nye married Katherine Tupper and they migrated from England to Saugus, MA in 1635 on the ship Abigail. One of the first men to settle in Sandwich, Benjamin Nye built this home. He erected a mill by the stream from his pond in 1669, and built one of the first grist mills in the country. In 1924, the house was sold out of the family to the state of Massachusetts. The state poorly maintained the house which was threatened with demolition in 1962. The Nye Family Association stepped in, acquired the property and restored the house. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is run as a museum.
The Nye Family Association acquired the East Sandwich Grange Hall in 1991 which is operated today as a Community Hall. The East Sandwich Grange #139, a local branch of a national farm family fraternity, was formed in 1887. In 1889 on land provided by Samuel H. Nye, the Grange Hall is constructed and a grist mill is moved from the Bumps River in Centerville and set up on the site of the old mill (after almost 200 years, the original grist mill was taken down in 1867).
From June 20th to mid-October, hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12pm to 4:30pm. Closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays. For more detailed information on the homestead and museum, please visit this website -- https://sites.google.com/site/nyefamilyofamerica/home/homestead-museum.
