Saddle and Pillion Cemetery
Edmund Freeman, one of the founders of Sandwich, and his wife, Elizabeth, are buried in the Saddle and Pillion Cemetery. Elizabeth died on February 14, 1676 and was buried on the hill of the Freeman farm. Edmund and his sons placed a large stone, which in form resembled a pillion, as a monument for her grave. According to the Meriam Webster Dictionary, a pillion is mostly an English term for a pad or cushion put on behind a man's saddle specifically for a woman to ride on. Another, longer stone was placed nearby and was similar in form to a saddle. These two large stones are known as “the saddle and pillion.”
Family tradition says that they reminded Edmund of the early years in Sandwich when he and his wife, Elizabeth, traveled by horseback across the fields of their farm. Edmund Freeman died in 1682 and was buried beside Elizabeth and the longer stone, “the saddle,” was placed over his grave. The bronze tablets on these stone monuments were placed there on August 22, 1910 by members of the Freeman family.
