Deacon Eldred House
Built in 1756 on Shawme Pond, the Deacon Eldred House used to be home to the Thornton Burgess Museum, which was devoted to the life and work of Thornton Burgess (1874-1965) who was born in Sandwich. His grandfather, Thomas Burgess, was one of the first settlers of Sandwich in 1637. A conservationist and author of children’s books, he wrote more than 170 books and 15,000 stores for his syndicated daily newspaper column. Thorton Burgess was the creator of classic children's characters such as Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox and Hooty Owl. Many of his stories had their origins in the forests, fields, waters and wildlife habitats of Sandwich.
