Welcome to My Gold Award Take Action Project!
Welcome! My name is Shannon. I'm a Senior at Sturgis Charter Public School West in Hyannis, MA and have been a Girl Scout for 13 years. I am a member of Senior Troop 826 whose members hail from Bourne and Sandwich, MA. My Gold Award project focuses on promoting awareness of historical and recreational sites around Sandwich. I have received permission to plant geocaches at numerous locations, from historical sites and cemeteries to restaurants and shops. I enjoy geocaching and feel that this kind of project would be a great way to share my interest in geocaching with others while simultaneously sharing many of Sandwich’s historical and recreational opportunities with tourists and residents alike. I decided to do this project because I realized that there were some places around Sandwich that few people knew the significance of, or even knew about, even though they might drive by these sites every day.
I used different types of geocaches due to the variety of the 60 locations chosen, which range from historic homes to recreational areas to noteworthy Sandwich landmarks. For some locations, I used a plant stake as a geocache. The stake’s waterproof plaque will contain the location name, as well as a QR code that individuals can scan with their smart phone. The QR code will bring them to pages on this website with information about the location and a link to websites with additional information. Other locations have a traditional geocache, a container hidden at given coordinates that will also have a QR code. Still others are virtual geocaches, meaning people visit a set of coordinates to discover a location rather than a container because the location is not conducive to hiding a physical geocache.
